Cylinder Head Removal

Started on our engine last week. Mercedes-Benz MBE 900. Luckily we have the service manual at school. We began by removing the EGR system, followed by the cylinder head. Learning to slow down, read ahead, know what you are doing before you tear into something.

DEF Systems

Not a whole lot to report for last week. I did ask how diesel exhaust fluid helped the exhaust system at school and got a brief "in a nut shell" explanation and told that we would be looking into it later in the quarter. Curiosity got the better of me and I looked online. Of course, Cummins released a comprehensive article explaining how the DEF system works in addition to how selective catalytic reduction system may improve your fleets fuel economy. Its a good read, here is the link.

Wire Crimping

Some wire crimping I did last week. Used some heat shrink for the battery cable. The weather pack was pretty easy. The Deutz pin was interesting though, in order to remove the pin you need a special piece of plastic that probably cost a fortune. Without this tool the pin cannot be removed as the slot has a locking pin that holds the rim of the pin in place.

Got to do some soldering for the first time, feel like it turned out well. Just need to make sure that you are getting proper heat to melt the solder.

Week 10 (9/14-18)

Had a fun project last month. Had a height clearance issue and the roof clearly won. So we set out to salvage the box. Learned that aluminum must be cut with a blade instead of a grinding/cutting wheel. The grinder will actually embed impurities in the aluminum. This whole project also reinforced just how clean your aluminum must be.
